Balmorals composing songs
National Library of Scotland
A piano has been set on a stair outside a front doorway. The building is long and low and has windows opening down the side. Two older women are standing in the door and kids are hanging out of the windows. There is a man sitting at the piano and a clown is leaning against it. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have taken this rather successful, propaganda photograph. Semi-professional entertainment was provided for off-duty soldiers so that leisure time did not become depressingly directionless. There were companies of entertainers who toured the Front to boost morale. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT.
